Organisation

After my holiday, I found myself seized with a desire to change and renew. Gradually, in the past few weeks, I have completely cleaned and reorganised the kitchen, which is extremely small, and requires a degree of anal organisation in order to find things and cook them - something we haven’t been able to achieve in the past. The organisation, I mean, not the ability to cook things.

Now, there are new containers in the fridge, holding loose bottles and packages, and wire shelves on our only shelf to stack more cans on. Everything is categorised, and easily accessible. The drawers and cupboards have all been cleaned out and rearranged, and there’s a brand new red tea-towel hanging on the oven. Even if our tea-towels are clean, it doesn’t feel like they are when they’re covered in stains and have holes in them.

This afternoon, I took the spirit of reorganisation to the bedroom, lined all my drawers in a delicately pretty patterned paper, hauled everything out of them, folded it and put it all away again. I even threw out the undies with no elastic that I keep for emergencies, as while folding up an enormous pile of undies I decided that I actually have plenty, enough for several emergencies to occur in a row.

The new clothes I acquired on the weekend are hung up in the wardrobe - two long sleeved cotten work shirts with elegant pin-stripes, pale grey work pants, a soft grey cotton skirt, and a loose sleeved grey top. Prior to going shopping, I had read that grey was my colour, and looking at the results of my little spree I seem to have taken it to heart, . They are all different shades of grey, however - it’s not so monochromatic as it sounds.

While reorganising things feels wonderful, it is a rather dull subject to write about, so I think I’ll stop there. Next weekend, some gardening organisation is on the cards, which will hopefully be a more exciting subject to reflect upon.

  • This sounds like something I would have done at your age. I find as I become older, my anal attention to household organization has subsided. I still have vivid memories of cleaning every square inch of my house when I was on a 6-month maternity leave for my first child. It would probably have been a better idea to play with the baby for those 6 months. However, it is a good feeling to complete one of those “organizing” tasks.

  • I very much enjoyed reading about your reorganization projects…heck, I’m completely anal about organization myself, but I still buy and read books about how to get organized simply because I like stories of other folks’ undertakings.
