After going shopping for a new suit yesterday (and buying the first one I tried on, as it both fit and was heavily discounted - very serendipitous), I went off to the matinee performance of Women in Voice 15. WIV is a bit of a Brisbane institution, running as it has done for 15 years now. It’s a showcase of a collection of women singers, who do cabaret style solo performances (and sing harmonies for the others if required) and then do one song together at the end. I went to see Women in Voice 10 with my mother, and really enjoyed it. When I noticed that Kristina Olsen, one of my favourite folk singers, was performing this year, I decided to go along.
Kristina’s set was fabulous as usual, although it was interesting to hear her songs performed by a band, rather than just herself and her guitar. Of the other performers, I think Megan Samardin was my favourite - she exploded onto the stage and did this incredibly energetic performance. She has an amazing voice, all power and depth. I also enjoyed Emma Dean’s selection of songs, but enjoyed her a little less than Samardin or Olsen. She did a cover of I Believe in a Thing Called Love which was very cool, and her originals were good as well, but I think her long blonde curls and white “princess” dress put me off a bit.
I think I’m probably the only person in Brisbane who’s excited about the new library building opening tomorrow in Brisbane Square, but as I go to the library at least once a week I have a bit of an excuse. I have planned a trip after work to return an overdue book and have a poke around the new premises, to discover such thrilling things as where the hold shelves are and whether there are actually nice friendly armchairs for reading in. The never-ending excitement of my life, I tell you.

Does a weekly trip to the library mean you read a book a week? If so, I’m impressed given you are fairly busy in establishing your career!

Don’t you worry - recieving an ordered-in book from the library is my number one thrill.

WIV sounds like something I would love too. There’s nothing like experiencing the talent of many women in one evening to put me in a really great mood.

Ok, I live here but… where is Brisbane Square? And there’s a new library building going there?
I am excited about the State Library *finally* reopening. Hopefully the redevelopment was worth it.

True, indeed Cat - I bow before your wisdom
About two or three books a week Barbara - I have an hour’s train ride in the afternoon, so the reading hours add up.
Be-zen - yay, a kindred soul!
It was really great, TB - and interesting to see so many different styles within the one show.
Oh, Madame B! Brisbane Square is that horribly ugly new building on George Street with the blue and orange and yellow and green painted sections all next to each other. And the Central library has moved in there, along with all the Council facilities. I’ve never actually been to the State library, so you can tut at me for that
Ruby, finding libraries exciting is just not the sort of thing I tend to admit to in public, not unless I’ve ascertained that similarly bookish people are listening
