I’ve been trying to be discreet about it

I received a phone call yesterday informing me that my camera had arrived, and lo, there was much rejoicing. I charged up the battery last night and spent far too brief a time playing around with it before going to bed. I have been sitting at work all day wondering why on earth I’m here when I could be at home taking pictures. Maybe I could suddenly come down with a terrible disease. So far my thoughts are that it is the most wonderful camera in the world and it’s going to take me years to work out what all the buttons do.

I am rather smugly pleased with my Christmas arrangements this year. My cards and letters are almost finished, and I should have them in the post tomorrow. All the presents that need posting have been posted, which thankfully weren’t that many because the cost of postage nearly gave me a heart attack. This weekend is designated as the Grand Baking Extravaganza of 2006, although I haven’t quite decided what I’m making yet. Nigella Lawson’s brownies are definitely in, but I’m yet to choose my biscuit recipes. And naturally, I will be taking photos (photos! With the camera!) of the results. I’ve already bought a selection of pretty little boxes to be filled with tissue paper and baked goods. Oh yes, I’m too revoltingly domestic for words.

Most hilarious overheard conversation this week:
Guy Across the Partition is having yet another personal conversation about his wife’s miscarriage. I’m trying to ignore him and am dictating away because dear god, I have heard enough about the miscarriage. His voice gradually gets louder and louder, either because it’s a bad phone line or because he’s a lunatic. I’m not ruling out the latter. “Have you heard about Marge ? I said, have you heard about Marge! Yeah, she’s been having a bit of a rough time lately! Yes, yes, I’m afraid so!” He’s now bellowing. “YES, WELL, WE’VE BEEN TRYING TO BE DISCREET ABOUT IT!” I turn off the dictaphone, lie my head on the desk, and begin to cry with somewhat silent laughter.

I made the mistake of telling Prince Valiant about the incident, and now he occasionally leaps around a corner and screams at me, “WE’RE TRYING TO BE DISCREET ABOUT IT!” which makes me collapse with laughter all over again. I’m just glad that the Guy occasionally makes me laugh, because otherwise he would have driven me mad by now. And it would have been a pity to be declared mad before I turned 25.

(That was an incredibly subtle way of announcing that I turn 25 tomorrow. A quarter-century - now, that’s proper adulthood.)

  • Congratulations! Quarter-century! Wow!

See, that wasn’t too hard was it? Now you only have to do all that three more times and you get your telegram from the Queen. (Providing she lives to 155, that is.)

Have fun tomorrow, but BE DISCREET ABOUT IT!

  • happy birthday young’un!!!

  • Happy birthday!

AND THE CAMERA IS HERE!!!! This is very exciting :)

You’ve proven to be much more efficient at your Xmas preparations than I was planning on being… my Xmas cards are gathering dust on my desk and resolutely remain unwritten in :P

  • Happy birthday! We’re expecting pictures in your Blog now that you have the new camera. Cameras open up a whole new world of fun!

    Barbara

  • Dude, I’m ALMOST THIRTY! Although, you wouldn’t believe it if you saw me.

Random thought: Remember how the prince said I look very American? Ok, so I’ve been thinking this on and off since then, but I just now remembered to tell you. Tell him, I think he looks like a beer-guzzling hillbilly…or trucker, whichever he thinks suits him better! (It’s not a bad thing. He looks like the people I grew up with.)

  • Happy Birthday, Dearheart. 25 is a lovely age. Just grown up enough to not look silly when you have to be adult, yet still young enough to be tickled with the awesome perks that come with age.

And the discrete thing? Had me in hysterics. Funniest thing I’ve read in a good long while. Thanks! ~LA

  • Happy Birthday, Cee! You, me and Cat are the Christmas babies. Looking forward to seeing the pictures of your baking weekend. I will be doing the same - baking for my birthday and my daughter’s. Hers is obviously far more important.

  • Happy Birthday old girl! :-D Welcome to your mid-twenties; it’s all downhill from here. Hee!

  • Happy Happy Birthday!!!

Ugh I just spent all afternoon addressing Christmas cards for my clients. I think I am slightly braindead…and I have to spend Monday doing all my baking…

  • Happy Birthday, Cee. I hope you had a great day. You’re getting married this year, aren’t you? I also got married at age twenty-five. I liked being twenty-five!

I made a Jamie Oliver cake for Kiko’s birthday and it didn’t turn out too bad. I’m looking forward to seeing your photos.

You’re more organised with your Christmas cards than me. I got them all out apart from three and at this rate those three will never get posted. Today was my mental deadline and I still haven’t written them…

  • Thanks Mikefitz - I was very discreet :-)

I’ll have you know, Carolyn, that I am extremely old. Young’un indeed :-)

Thanks Madame B - the camera is the coolest! I’ll have to get together with you and force you to be my model. Mwahahaha ;-)

    Thanks Barbara :-)

    You’re ancient, M ;-)

I think it’ll be a good year, LA.

I’ve made biscotti so far Charlotte, and it’s turned out well - the rest should be easy :-)

Thanks Mela - enjoy doing your baking!

Yep, I’ll be getting married at 25, Helen. And this is the most organised I’ve ever been for Christmas (I see it as a sign of my magically increased maturity ;-))
